Westbrook Becomes Drop-Off Site for Santa's Workshop

Westbrook Educational Academy is now an official drop-off site for a toy drive organized through Robin's Nest of Glassboro, NJ. The drive is called "Santa's Workshop." Once Robin's Nest collects toy donations from Westbrook and other local businesses, they will set up a temporary "store" for local parents who need help providing for their children this holiday season. Last year, Santa's Workshop provided gifts for over 660 needy families.

According to its website, Robin's Nest is a children's services organization dedicated to ensuring the safety of children and enhancing their well-being in a family setting.

Westbrook is excited to participate in such a worthwhile event! Please consider dropping off a new, unwrapped toy at our Sewell campus over the next couple of weeks.

What is sonography?
Ultrasonography, commonly referred to as sonography, is a diagnostic medical procedure that uses high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to produce dynamic visual images of organs, tissues, or blood flow inside the body. This type of procedure is often referred to as a sonogram or ultrasound scan. Sonography can be used to examine parts of the body such as the abdomen, breasts, female reproductive system, prostate, heart, and blood vessels. Sonography is used in the detection and treatment of heart disease, heart attack, and vascular disease that can lead to stroke. It is also used to guide fine needles, in tissue biopsy, and to assist in taking cell samples for lab testing. Unlike X rays, sonography is a radiation free imaging modality. There are several areas of specialization in the field of sonography such as abdominal (liver spleen, urinary tract, pancreas, etc), breast, gynecological, echocardiography (blood flow of the heart), vascular technology (abdominal blood flow), neurosonology (brain & spinal cord), and ophthalmology (eye and orbital structures).

What does a medical sonographer do?
A diagnostic medical sonographer is a highly-skilled professional who uses specialized equipment to create images of structures inside the human body that are used by physicians to make a medical diagnosis. The process involves placing a small device called a transducer against the patient’s skin near the body area to be imaged. The transducer works like a loudspeaker and microphone because it can transmit and receive sound, sending a stream of high frequency sound waves into the body where they bounce off of the structures inside. These sounds are analyzed by a computer to make an image of the structures on a television screen or taped recording. Sonographers have extensive direct patient contact that may include performing some invasive procedures. They interact with people that range from healthy to the critically ill. A medical sonographer’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

* Obtaining and recording an accurate patient history
* Performing diagnostic procedures& obtaining diagnostic images
* Analyzing technical information
* Using independent judgment in recognizing the need to extend the scope of the procedure according to diagnostic analysis.
* Providing an oral and written summary of the technical findings to the physician for medical diagnosis.
* Providing quality patient care.
* Collaborating with physicians and other members of the health care team.

What are the career opportunities in sonography?
The field of sonography has grown significantly in the last 20 years. Today sonographers can choose to work in a variety of clinics, hospitals, private practice physician offices, public health facilities, laboratories, and other medical settings performing examinations in their areas of specialization. Additional career advancement opportunities exist in education, administration, research, and commercial companies as education/application specialists, sales representatives, technical advisors, etc.

What salary can I expect as a trained medical sonographer?
In addition to excellent career opportunities, salaries for medical sonographers are competitive or higher than other professionals with similar levels of education. According to salary.com (2009) the average salary for sonagraphers was $62,442, similarly indeed.com noted a salary of 66,000, and salaryexpert.com 61,000 – 66,000. $SDMS salary and benefits guide (released march 2005) noted a typical hourly rate of $29 with 3 hours overtime on average, and on-call pay rate of $3/hour with an incall rate of $42/hour. Salaries vary based on location, years experience, number of specialties practiced, as well as geographic location. There are opportunities for full and part time employment as well.

It's never too early to begin working on your resume. Once you've started on a career path, whether it's a college or career school, you are ready to begin drafting your cover letters and resumes to potential employers. Learning how to write a great cover letter and resume is a crucial step in separating yourself from the competition. In this article, we'll go over some important tips on how to write a cover letter and resume that will dramatically increase your chances of obtaining an interview at your dream job. Making a Good First Impression: Resume and Cover Letter

The Four Keys to Writing a Killer Cover Letter

Be concise. As much as you might feel like telling your whole "amazing" life story, try to keep it to a page or so. Remember, your cover letter is just one of many. Most likely the hiring manager doesn't need to know about that time you scored the winning run in a kickball game back in 5th grade.

Be specific. Rather than typing up one generic cover letter and mailing it to all potential employers, tailor each cover letter to the specific job for which you're applying. Taking a few minutes to do this with each one will assure the hiring managers that you are selective in choosing your career. Also, if you've had specific success in the past related to the position you're applying for, take a sentence or two and highlight it.
Be honest. Confidence is important, but be realistic about which skills you can bring to the position and what your employer can expect from you. Don't just repeat the information listed on your resume; take this opportunity to relay a few details about yourself that might not be apparent on your resume.
Proofread! After typing up your letter, have a friend or someone you trust read it over to double check for spelling and grammatical mistakes. The spelling tools on your computer are not foolproof and a fresh set of eyes will often pick up small details that you might have missed. Perhaps they might also suggest a different way of phrasing a sentence or ask you to clarify a point or two using more detail. According to marketwatch.com, nearly half of hiring managers reported catching a job candidate lying on their resume. Of those caught lying only six percent were actually hired and nearly 60 percent of those employers immediately dismissed the applicant.
DO get the proper education or training for the position you're applying for. Salary.com reports that employers plan to hire 16 percent more new college graduates than they did last year. Plus, the Association of Colleges and Employers says that the overall average starting salary offer given to new college graduates, regardless of major, increased by over 7 percent in comparison to last year.
DON'T forget to follow up. After you've sent your resume, be sure to call or email after a few days to ensure that your resume was received. Be patient, polite and persistent about getting your interview set up.

One Last Hint - Job Placement
Most colleges and career schools offer job placement services located conveniently on campus. Often the schools develop close relationships with local companies who hire directly from the crop of recent graduates. Many times, it's even possible to get your foot in the door before graduation via an internship. Job placement services serve as an intermediary between the academic and professional world. In addition to job placement, many colleges and career schools offer free resume help, mock interviews and career fairs to ensure that their students are getting all the help they need to find the job of their dreams.

College is not for everyone, but that does not mean you shouldn't pursue some sort of higher education or job training. When you think about your future, what do you envision? Are you doing something you love, or are you just working for a paycheck? If you are one of the many who is trying to make a decision about where to spend your money and invest your future, read on. This article provides a comparison of 4 year colleges and technical schools. Which one is right for you?

How to choose between 4-year colleges and technical schools:
Ask yourself these questions and then consider the benefits and disadvantages of each type of school.

What are your goals? Do you have a specific career goal? What are your educational goals? Do you want to learn as much as you can about a variety of subjects? Do you want to learn as much as you can about one specific topic (become an expert)?

What are your strengths? Weaknesses? Would you benefit from a shorter more targeted program?

Be a consumer. Check equipment; is it new and up-to-date? How does it compare to the equipment you will be using on the job? Trust me, this can be tedious but it is quite important. After graduation I realized I should have taken more time to research the computer programs employers expected me to know for technical writing jobs. Had I been better informed, I could have taken extra courses dealing specifically with those programs.
